Because there is no school tomorrow, today is our Friday! We need this day off! Catherine has to work for several hours tomorrow, and there is the Homecoming football game tomorrow evening, but we all get to SLEEP IN! That is the best part of the day as far as I am concerned.
This evening is the parade, and Saturday night is the dance. Saturday morning is the league cross country meet, and this year it is held at our school. I love watching this sport, and our females could dominate the meet. I want to be there to support the students. Sunday Catherine has to work, but overall we will be sleeping in most of the weekend. This break is much needed!

Her first official acceptance
Yesterday the mail brought Catherine's first acceptance letter. We were all so excited! It doesn't mean she is going to attend there, but we are super excited that this is an option. Unfortunately, she doesn't meet the requirements to enter the pre-nursing program, so she will need to see what she can do in that regard. I just can't believe that these days are upon us. Monday was such a rough day for her in terms of her attitude and decisions she was making, so it terrifies me that someday she is going to be completely on her own. At the same time, I know she is a lovely young lady, truly, and she is going to be fine. Oh goodness, these years have gone by so quickly. I am so excited to see what next year brings, but sure don't want to wish away this year!

Today is the exact opposite of yesterday
Yesterday I was in kindergarten. I appreciate that I get to sleep in on the days I am at the elementary, but little ones are soooo exhausting. I enjoy them for the day, but I was very grateful to be returning to teenagers at the high school today.
And this could not be more opposite than yesterday. Yesterday, I barely had time to sit down at any point. I had recess duty, it was only a half our specials day, and overall it was just a physically tiring day. Today, this teacher wanted to teach her first period class, then she left for a field trip. She didn't have a second period class, so I didn't start having students until third period. Her fourth period class is with her on her field trip, and she doesn't have a fifth period class either. I will have students for 6th period, but she expects to be back for the last class of the day. It really doesn't get much easier than this. I almost feel guilty about being paid for this, but I also know that there are many things I am willing to do that most normal subs wouldn't do, so it all evens out. It's a nice quiet day for me today!

An extra little spring in my step
As I came to school this morning, I couldn't help but feel a little extra spring in my step. Not only is it Friday, but the weather is absolutely AWESOME! It felt chilly this morning, and that felt wonderful. In fact, our high temperature today is lower than any of the lows we've had this week. It really helped to put an extra spring my step this morning.
And of course it actually is Friday. With the heat, it's been an incredibly long week. I just don't seem to have the energy that I used to, and I find I need to go to bed around 9 or 9:30 these days. Staying up until 10 isn't a good idea. Knowing, however, that I get to sleep past 8:00 both tomorrow and Sunday does help a little bit with my perspective...and I am hoping for a nap after school as well!
The classroom I'm primarily in today (although I have to visit elsewhere during a couple of periods) is a second floor classroom that overlooks the back field at the school. It was lovely this morning as the sun came up. The trees look like fall, although they aren't full of color. But things aren't the vibrant green of summer either, and it's a lovely reminder that my favorite season has arrived...and not just on the calendar!

Time to get some shopping done
Once the calendar hits October 1, I am a firm believer that "all things holiday" kick in. I'm not a fan of Halloween (at all), but I do love to decorate for the fall, and I have some cute decorations that are even Halloween specific. Then I love my Thanksgiving decorations even more, and of course the best is the Christmas decorations. It all makes my heart happy.
However, Christmas is also busy, so I try to knock out as much of the Christmas shopping as possible this year. I'll be honest, I'm finding it a little tougher this year. I don't expect Robert to be around, and we don't really know what would be helpful so I'm sure we will just send a check. For Catherine, I would love to get a jump on things she might need for college, but not only do we not know for sure where she will be attending, we aren't completely certain she will be going away. There are many options that would allow her to remain at home and save money. Then there are my grandmothers and my in-laws. My grandmothers are 90 and 88. What do you get for them? I love to give them pictures, but honestly, how many of those do they need of my family/kids sitting around their house? After all, they have other family members as well! I'll probably do some gift cards, but I'm just feeling at a bit of a loss. The same is pretty much true of my in-laws. When I was at their house over Labor Day weekend, I found myself looking around and wondering how things would end up. Some of the things I can easily picture in my own home, but most will not. Everything there has to be handled at some point though, and with my father-in-law's declining health I can't help but feel that time is sooner rather than later. Gift cards are again safe, but even then their world is getting smaller so the options are fewer.
Ultimately, these are blessings...so many loved ones to buy for, and especially those who have been with us for so long. I absolutely love this time of year!

Fall is almost here
I understand that by the calendar date standard, it has been fall for ten days now. However, our area set record high temperatures in the low 90's Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Today is supposed to be near 90, but the cold front comes through this afternoon. Tonight into tomorrow, it becomes absolutely glorious! In fact tomorrow, it isn't supposed to get out of the 60's. I am thrilled beyond words. Checking the extended forecast, there is nothing higher than the upper 70's to be seen. It's my kind of weather!
I am looking forward to the first real fall weekend of the year. It's been a busy week, and our weekend has plenty of plans, but I always feel the cooler weather makes things better. Tomorrow evening the kids have a football commitment, and Andrew and I are hoping to grill some steaks for dinner as a celebration of the anniversary of our first date. Catherine is planning to attend an amusement park with her best friend on Saturday. Because of the distance, I will be driving them there and back. Andrew has to work Saturday morning. Sunday is church and a youth pancake breakfast following, and Catherine will work most of the day. It's certainly a weekend with a schedule, but on the upside, the weather will be delightful while doing so.

It sure doesn't feel like October
October 1 has arrived! I love this month. At least, I love what is supposed to happen this month, although it isn't happening yet! Today when I first turned on the TV at 6AM, it was 70 degrees! Now, I am fine with that being the high for the day, but that was before dawn!!!! Our highs today are to be in the lower 90's, just like yesterday, and we are to reach 90 again tomorrow. Yuck!!! This does not feel like my favorite season! Thankfully, a cold front comes through on Thursday, and on Friday we won't even reach 70 at any point during the day. Now that's what I'm talking about!
It looks a little like fall around here, but not because of the bright, vibrant colors. Sadly, because we have actually gone into drought conditions, things are simply dying and the leaves are falling off in a brown color. It's disappointing, but hopefully with some cooler temps we can still salvage a little bit of color.
I love this season, and I love this month! Seriously, last night I was so giddy about October arriving I was having trouble sleeping. I love the midwest in the fall!
